My ten years in Asia, and especially my two years in China have taught me one thing about language: no matter how much I study and no matter how great my teacher is, there are always going to be things that I don't understand. Thanks for decoding these, Martin. Sam Brier, photographer
About Us
I enjoy translating Chinese literature, poetry and propaganda. The moral exhortations and advertisements here are both baffling and excellent for learning Chinese. They change often, so much of what you see here is already old. The phrase of 2005 is "hexie" or "harmonious". Buy an old bicycle for 80 yuan and explore the back-roads and remaining Hutongs; you're sure to recognize a few slogans. Martin Winter, translator
